What Every Beginning Investor Should Know

Hi Zvi,

I enjoyed your Worry-free Investing book and your recent interview with Jeremy Siegel. At the time of the interview I agreed with your position and felt that I could continue on the worry-free path. Since the interview TIPS prices have dislocated upward, I Savings Bond limits have been set to $5,000 per account instead of $30,000 and stock prices have
fallen a bit. I feel confused now... As a risk averse investor (especially when stocks are historically expensive). I am not sure what I should be doing at this time, ride out the low interest rates or adjust my plan. At some point stocks will make sense again, I’m not sure if that should happen based on historical stock valuations or based on risk premiums for stocks versus intermediate term inflation bonds. I would really like to know how you feel about this, has your plan changed? Would you be purchasing 5 year duration(or any other duration) muni bond funds, more TIPS, commodities (this would be a no way for myself) or stocks? What would be the situation that would motivate you to increase the level of stocks in a conservative long term (20 year) portfolio? I like looking at the value of US stocks based on the S&P500 P/E using 10 year average earnings that Robert Shiller keeps an updated spreadsheet on, at this time the P/E is still well above 20, historically high but with a larger risk premium than last Fall.
